DR. KABIR JIVRAJ

Dr. Kabir Jivraj brings more then 25 years of experience as a senior executive, Board Member, principal investor, and business builder to Western Investment Company. His experience spans a broad range of industries including; health care, real estate, hospitality, technology, education, seniors housing and care management. Kabir has led business acquisitions, growth and divestitures totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.

Dr. Jivraj is an anesthetist and has been involved in health and health care both provincially and nationally through public service, non-profit and business organizations over the last 35 years. He served as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Alberta Health Services – Calgary Health Region from 1999 to 2002. He also served as the Vice Dean of the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine from 2000 to 2002 and has been a Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine since 2001. He has taught undergraduate and graduate students since 1988.

His health care experience and entrepreneurial spirits brought him into the business arena. He co-founded Age Care Investments Ltd. which is now one of the leading service providers in the continuing care sector in Alberta and has provided strategic and operational guidance to the organization. He provided strategic direction and executive management expertise to start-up technology companies through venture capital finance. Over the years, he has pursued various opportunities in Canada and overseas through partnership and special purpose vehicles. His international exposure has covered the UK, Africa, China and USA.

A passionate community advocate, Kabir served as the Chair of Focus Humanitarian Assistance, Canada, Governor of the University of Calgary Board, Honorary Treasurer of the Canadian Medical Association, President of the Alberta Medical Association, Chair of the Board of the United Way of Calgary and Area, and as a member of the Board of the Calgary Homeless Foundation, the Calgary Police Foundation, and the Calgary Health Trust.

Selected Achievements

• Alberta Medical Association’s Medal of Distinguished Service in May 2000.
• Alberta Centennial Award in 2005, awarded to Albertans who have made significant contributions to their fellow citizens, their community and to Alberta.
• Honoured in 2005 as one of The 100 Alberta’s Physicians of the Century by the Alberta Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
• Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for outstanding contributions to clinical care and health administration.

Qualifications

• Graduate of the Directors Education Program, ICD Corporate Governance College.
• Bachelor of Medical and Surgery degree from the University of London, UK.
• FRCP, Anaesthesia (University of British Columbia).
• Fellow -Critical Care Medicine (University of Alberta).
• FCCP –  American College of Chest Physicians.
